Calf Raise
Small exercise, big return for walking and balance.
What it trains
Calf strength, ankle stability, walking push-off.
Why it's useful
Calves push you forward every step and stabilise the ankle during balance work.
Setup
- Stand tall with light support from a rail or wall.
- Rise up onto the balls of the feet.
- Pause briefly at the top.
- Lower under control.
Three coaching cues
- Push evenly through both feet
- Full range up and down
- Control the descent
Common mistakes
- Bouncing
- Rolling to the outside of the foot
- Rushing
Use both feet with support.
Progress to single-leg calf raises, or add load.
Safety considerations
- Keep light support in reach until confident.
