What it trains
Static balance across progressively narrower bases.
Why it's useful
Builds the confidence and skill of balance without the risks of unsupported single-leg work early on.
Setup
- Stand near a stable support (bench, wall, sturdy chair).
- Feet together — hold for a chosen time.
- Progress to semi-tandem, then tandem, then supported single-leg stance.
Three coaching cues
- Eyes forward on a fixed point
- Breathe normally
- Support within reach
Common mistakes
- Progressing too quickly
- Practising alone before it's safe
Easier version
Widen the base of support.
More challenging
Reduce support, close eyes with hand near support, or add a light dual task.
Safety considerations
- Always have a stable support within reach.
- Seek assessment for repeated falls, unexplained dizziness or new neurological symptoms.
